Why the hell not? They should absolutely be poised to the Chinese threat. I pray this is a propaganda piece.

PLA Amphibious Capabilities: Structured for Deterrence - The Jamestown Foundation
PLA Amphibious Capabilities: Structured for Deterrence - The Jamestown Foundation:
Quotable Quote's:
"Obviously, the cross-Strait political situation has changed and Beijing may have realized that overt, obvious attempts to intimidate Taiwan with amphibious exercises in Fujian are counterproductive. To be sure, the Chinese defense industry has the capacity to build more landing ships and craft in a relatively short time and the PLA could be given the resources to surge the tempo and intensity of amphibious training."
Great, so they are not going to attack Taiwan...then aside from preventing our marines from landing on their beaches (which, if you have been reading my blog, seems highly unlikely), what do they need such a fleet of craft and soldiers for?

Pentagon: China Bolsters Projection, Anti-Access Systems - Defense News
Pentagon: China Bolsters Projection, Anti-Access Systems - Defense News
The politicians keep citing Taiwan as the major concern. To me, it would be to Japan's existence, South Korea's, and the major trade route these seas create. On top of that, the Chinese do not think like US. They are definitely 0-sum in their thought, appeasing Western powers, all the while supporting regimes we hate (Iran for example, Pakistan as another), and biding their time to "Rise Again"...not too difficult to see yet it never gets published.
