The Marines

Marine Corps, Defense Secretary Robert Gates: Gates orders review of Marines' role - latimes.com

Why not just use them the way they are...but push the envelope. Make the Marines a specialized force to supplement the other branches. Instead of a whole branch, just make them extremely specialized soldiers and training for the others. When I think of a Marine today, it is a far cry from the leather-coat wearing of the past.

For instance, take the Army's basic qualifying standards, and use the Marines for a better incentive...physically and mentally. You would end up with better trained soldiers who want to be, as well as save money. I don't think eliminating the branch is necessary since not all areas of the world are interested in have advanced technology to down destroyers (yet) but this argument will definitely come up in the future.

I say make it a hybrid type of project...combine their training, set the regular units to a higher standard (and paygrade if they excel in this environment). You would have a more versatile force to be used in the other branches, and not remove an entire branch of the military.

We need bullet sponges.
