Let's Compare to Other Situations

The Associated Press: Lebanon: US military aid halt is 'unwarranted'

The same situation is happening on the US border with Mexico as you read. We supply arms to the government. The government is either corrupt or influenced by third parties. Those parties then obtain the weapons meant to secure Democracy and peace and use them against our allies.

I don't understand why we would stop giving aid. If the governments of these countries are so corrupt, or have turned corrupt (by our fault or not), it is our duty to fix it, but we can't just throw money at the problem and not follow where it goes. We should just set up new rules about how the money is spent instead of handing over a briefcase full of Benjamin's.  With primary funding for Hezbollah coming from other states (Iran, Syria, Suadi, Emirates), hurting the people of Lebanon may not be the answer.  If anything, it will drive them in the opposite direction intended.

Better control over the funds would be a start. The only way this works is if the Lebanese government supports its people.  We are going through the same thing in Afghanistan and Iraq.  The first thought of the Lebanese should be to turn towards their central government, not Hezbollah, and cutting off the funding will only turn their attention towards the terrorists.

Which conflicts would better represent this situation?
