Putin's Popularity

"The crisis is unnerving the Russian elite, as the popularity ratings of Russia’s ruling duet of President, Dmitry Medvedev, and Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, are reportedly at an all-time low (Vedomosti, August 10). The Kremlin has, in turn, accused regional officials of negligence. Medvedev has sacked and reprimanded naval chiefs (EDM, August 5). Meanwhile, Medvedev declared that it is unacceptable to use the present natural disaster to promote opposition political agendas: it is clearly what the Kremlin most fears (Interfax, August 9)."

-Talking about the Russian fires.  If the duo are unpopular, where is the research on their opposition?  Who wil take over...for now, it seems Putin is lining himself up for the new leader.  It is only a small matter of time before it happens.  Almost inevitable, even if his ratings are at an all time low, they will miraculously be amazing again, or he will somehow manage to save the day from some crazy problem.  No matter what happens, or how unpopular this guy gets, he is still going to be the President of the Russian Federation.  How will the US deal with him in the long-run?

During Bush Jr's. reign, they were all buddy buddy.  Now, it seems, that Obama and Medvedev are willing to bend over backwards (at least President Obama is) in appeasing the Russians.  With Putin coming back into power, it would seem, from their point of view, that things have never been better between us but this idea is false.  Things could never be worse.  With Putin coming back, new rules will transpire.  If Obama is still in the white house he will be played like a puppet.  If it is someone new, I hope they clamp down on this BS.  THat is of course if Putin is not taken out by his own people first.
